Who handles backflow in San Luis Obispo
City of San Luis Obispo Utilities supplies the water and partners with the County of San Luis Obispo Environmental Health department to manage backflow testing. The County mails notices and reviews reports, and the City backs the program. Reports are due to the County within 10 days of the test.
What San Luis Obispo properties need a tested assembly
In SLO, every non-residential water service needs backflow protection: commercial buildings, dedicated irrigation meters and dedicated fire services. Some homes need one too, most often a house with a private well tied into its plumbing. Downtown restaurants, medical and dental offices near the hospitals, Cal Poly-area apartment complexes, and the business parks along Broad Street and Tank Farm make up most of the devices in town.
How we handle your test
We test each assembly with a calibrated differential gauge: both checks, and on an RP the relief valve. Most single devices take about 30 minutes. For a business, we test before you open or after you close, so the water's never off during your hours. We carry repair kits for the common Watts, Febco, Wilkins and Zurn assemblies, so most failures get repaired and retested in the same visit. You get a copy of the report, and we file the certified copy with the SLO County cross-connection program. A passing test that never reaches the district counts as no test.
San Luis Obispo notes
SLO has a lot of multi-device commercial sites, like a medical building with a domestic RP, an irrigation RP and a fire line. We test every device on the site in one visit. For medical and dental offices we schedule around patient hours, since the water to the protected side is off during the test.

The County's Environmental Health cross-connection program, working with the City.
+ Can you test our dental office without cancelling patients?
Yes. We test before opening or at close.
What Our Customers Say
I highly recommend Modern Perspective Plumbing! I called, and they were able to send someone to my house in a very short amount of time. Ed was friendly, personable, and easy to work with. He explained everything clearly, did great work, and the pricing was fair. It's so refreshing to find a company that provides excellent customer service and quality work. I wouldn't hesitate to call them again or recommend them to others.
Eddie was able to squeeze me into his schedule fast to help me with a bathroom remodel that I had already started demo on before I called him. When he showed up, he saw my old type M copper coming up from under the slab and advised me to replace that before it failed like half of my neighbors. He re-piped the house and the new bathroom within a couple days. Very clean and professional, highly recommend Eddie and Modern Perspective.
The team at Modern Perspective Plumbing are top of the line. Excellent quality work and even better human beings. Our old water heater was leaking and needed to be replaced. MPP visited same day to check out the situation. Eddie replaced it the very next morning after I finished water damage remediation. They've earned our future business and recommendation. Give 'em a call; they'll take care of you.
