Who handles backflow in Atascadero
Atascadero Mutual Water Company supplies the water, and its cross-connection program is administered by the County of San Luis Obispo's Environmental Health department. AMWC sends customers to the County's tester list, and test reports go to the County within 10 days of the test.
What Atascadero properties need a tested assembly
AMWC requires a device on properties with a well or other auxiliary supply, dedicated fire lines, and commercial sites with irrigation, pools, spas or hazardous chemicals. Assemblies are tested when installed, then every year. Atascadero has many large lots with old wells still tied into the plumbing, so residential devices are more common here than on the coast.
How we handle your test
We test each assembly with a calibrated differential gauge: both checks, and on an RP the relief valve. Most single devices take about 30 minutes. For a business, we test before you open or after you close, so the water's never off during your hours. We carry repair kits for the common Watts, Febco, Wilkins and Zurn assemblies, so most failures get repaired and retested in the same visit. You get a copy of the report, and we file the certified copy with the SLO County cross-connection program. A passing test that never reaches the district counts as no test.

Atascadero gets real freezes. An above-ground RP on the north side of a building, or one out in the open on a large lot, can crack its body in a hard night. An insulated cover costs a fraction of a new RP. If your assembly is exposed, we'll point it out at the test. If it has already cracked, we replace it and test the new one the same day.
